Feature singletons attract spatial attention independently of feature priming

چکیده
People perform better in visual search when the target feature repeats across trials (intertrial feature priming [IFP]). Here, we investigated whether repetition of a feature singleton's color modulates stimulus-driven shifts of spatial attention by presenting a probe stimulus immediately after each singleton display. The task alternated every two trials between a probe discrimination task and a singleton search task. We measured both stimulus-driven spatial attention (via the distance between the probe and singleton) and IFP (via repetition of the singleton's color). Color repetition facilitated search performance (IFP effect) when the set size was small. When the probe appeared at the singleton's location, performance was better than at the opposite location (stimulus-driven attention effect). The magnitude of this attention effect increased with the singleton's set size (which increases its saliency) but did not depend on whether the singleton's color repeated across trials, even when the previous singleton had been attended as a search target. Thus, our findings show that repetition of a salient singleton's color affects performance when the singleton is task relevant and voluntarily attended (as in search trials). However, color repetition does not affect performance when the singleton becomes irrelevant to the current task, even though the singleton does capture attention (as in probe trials). Therefore, color repetition per se does not make a singleton more salient for stimulus-driven attention. Rather, we suggest that IFP requires voluntary selection of color singletons in each consecutive trial.

Attentional guidance by salient feature singletons depends on intertrial contingencies.
Evidence that salient feature singletons guide attention only when the target and the singleton frequently coincide has been taken to suggest that selection of singletons is under top-down control: Observers strategically use an attentional set sensitive to the singleton being a target. Changing the singleton-target (or singleton-distractor) coincidence also changes the opportunity for facilita...

In the present study, we tested whether visual singletons remaining outside awareness are processed. Singletons differ by at least one feature from their more homogeneous neighbors. Here, we used backward masking to prevent awareness of shape singleton primes (Experiments 1-4) or color singleton primes (Experiment 5). Masked singleton primes nonetheless produced a congruence effect: Congruent s...

The presence of an irrelevant singleton disrupts search for a singleton target substantially more when the target feature varies unpredictably (mixed-singleton search) than when it is known in advance (fixed-singleton search). This finding suggests that advance knowledge of the target feature guides singleton search. Pinto et al. [Pinto, Y., Olivers, C. N. L., & Theeuwes, J. (2005). Target unce...

Six experiments are reported investigating whether a discontinuity in colour can accrue attentional priority. In addition to a standard visual search paradigm, we examined the degree to which colour singletons and nonsingletons are susceptible to change blindness. Results showed that changes occurring at colour singletons were relatively more resistant to change blindness. Although suggestive o...
متن کاملPriming of Pop-out provides reliable measures of target activation and distractor inhibition in selective attention
Recent research has demonstrated a striking role for intertrial priming in visual search. When searching for a discrepant target, repetition of the target feature speeds search, an effect known as Priming of Pop-out (PoP). In two experiments involving color singletons, we identified two independent components of PoP, target activation and distractor inhibition. Each component was reflected by t...
